Course Requirements
A Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) is required prior to beginning our CDL course. This permit authorizes you to practice driving on public roads with a licensed Class A Driver sitting in the passenger seat.
You can obtain your CLP through your local Department of Public Safety (DPS) office. The CDL Manual is available at your local DPS office and is free.
You will need to study and pass the following tests at DPS for your CLP:
- Commercial Rules (Section 14)
- General Knowledge (Sections 1, 2, 3, 12, 13)
- Combination (Section 6)
- Airbrakes (Section 5)
In addition to studying for your CLP, you will need to bring in proof that you have passed a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical. Once your physician completes the physical exam, you will receive a long form physical and a DOT physical card. You will need to take these forms with you to DPS. The approximate cost for a DOT physical is between $100.00 to $150.00 depending on facility.
Note: A CLP permit must be held for a minimum of 14 days prior to holder being allowed to take the CDL Skills Test (Driving Test). The driving test appointment will be set up by the school, with a license fee payable to DPS of approximately $100.00.
