The Byron and Lila Fite Ross Memorial Scholarship was established in 2006 by Marian Ross Anderson to honor the memory of her parents.

Byron and Lila Fite Ross were a pioneer family. Mr. Byron Ross was raised in the Snap Community and Lila Fite in Alsup, what is now known as Riderville. Mr. Ross made a living as a farmer and a cattleman. Mrs. Ross was a homemaker. They were married in 1918, and together they had one daughter, Marian Ross.

Marian Ross Anderson was born and raised in Carthage, Texas. She graduated from Carthage High School and hoped to attend College. Unfortunately, for financial reasons she was unable to attend college.

In 1944 Anderson went to work at the First National Bank. She was hired as a secretary for the president of the bank, Mr. Herman Jacobson. Her career lasted 37, years and when she left the bank in 1981 she was a Vice Chairman serving on First National Bank’s Board.

“I am delighted to establish this scholarship in memory of my parents. They were both generous and quick to offer a helping hand to those in need,” said Anderson. “In 1944 I received most of my training while on the job. Times have changed and today you just can’t reach your potential without a good education. I believe they would be pleased to have their names associated with a scholarship that helps others to achieve a brighter future.

The Byron and Lila Fite Ross Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student. The selection and announcement naming the recipients will be made in the spring each year.
