The Panola College Foundation Announces Recipient of the Lawrence R. and Debbie H. Sharp Endowed Scholarship
The Panola College Foundation is proud to announce Jackquelyn Sigala of Carthage as the recipient of the prestigious Lawrence R. and Debbie H. Sharp Endowed Scholarship.
The Lawrence R. and Debbie H. Sharp Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a Panola College graduate who is continuing their education at an accredited Texas four-year college or university. Recipients are selected based on demonstrated character, leadership, and a strong commitment to their education.
Sigala graduated Summa Cum Laude from Panola College on May 7, 2026, earning an Associate of Science in General Studies. Following graduation, she plans to attend the University of North Texas, where she will major in Political Science/Pre-Law as she prepares for law school and pursues her long-term goal of becoming an immigration lawyer.
“As a first-generation American and college student, I understand how fortunate I am to have access to higher education and a supportive family,” said Sigala. “This scholarship holds great meaning to me because it represents how important Panola College has been in helping me continue my education and reminds me that all of my hard work does pay off.”
During her time at Panola College, Sigala balanced dual-enrollment coursework while completing her high school studies. She credits the College’s professors, advisors, and supportive learning environment with preparing her for the academic rigor she will face at the university level.
“Taking dual enrollment courses at Panola College was crucial in preparing me for higher education,” Sigala shared. “The professors and community helped me become comfortable with the workload and environment while also guiding me through my next steps.”
Sigala demonstrated perseverance and personal responsibility throughout her academic journey, overcoming challenges and earning both her high school diploma and an associate degree simultaneously. In addition to her academic success, she remained highly involved in community service through organizations such as Key Club and National Honor Society, and participated in the Panola College History Club.
“Jackquelyn represents the very best of what we hope to see in our students as they pursue their goals beyond Panola College,” said Joanna Huckabee, Director of Institutional Advancement at Panola College. “Her dedication, resilience, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others will serve her well as she continues her education and pursues a career in law.”
Through the support of generous donors and endowed scholarships such as this one, the Panola College Foundation continues to invest in students pursuing their educational goals and reimagining their futures. Established in 1985 by the Sharp family in memory of Lawrence R. and Debbie H. Sharp, the scholarship honors two individuals whose lives were deeply rooted in education and the early history of Panola College. Lawrence R. Sharp served as an educator, county superintendent, and member of the original staff at Panola County Junior College, where he taught history and government. Debbie H. Sharp was the College’s first music instructor and author of the Panola Junior College school song. Together, the Sharps dedicated their lives to expanding educational opportunities in Panola County, and their legacy continues to impact students through this enduring scholarship opportunity.
