Music students visit Carthage Junior High

In celebration of Arts in Education Week, Panola College music students visited fine arts classes at Carthage Junior High to share their passion for music and encourage students to pursue the arts in their academic futures.

Four student performers from the Panola Pipers vocal group – Smith Esteves, Andrew Martin, Gabriela Laney, and Sara Kinney – gave an engaging performance for the junior high choir class. In addition to showcasing their talents, the students discussed scholarship opportunities available through the College’s music program.

The visit also included a special presentation by Mr. Dwaine Hubbard, Director of Bands at Panola College and former Carthage Junior High Band Director. Hubbard was joined by four current Panola band students – Sara Kinney, Whitley Youngblood, Kevin Arcibar, and Rae Bjorgaard – who spoke to junior high band students about their musical journeys, the instruments they play, and life as a college band member.

“We’re thankful to Carthage I.S.D. for the invitation to connect with young musicians in our community,” said Hubbard. “Supporting music and the arts in our schools is one of the many ways we invest in the future of our region. These experiences help students see what’s possible and connect them to opportunities they may not have considered before.”
