Panola College's instructional goals include 1) creating an academic atmosphere in which students may develop their intellects and skills and 2) providing courses so students may receive a certificate/an associate degree or transfer to a senior institution that offers baccalaureate degrees.

1. provide spoken Spanish for non-native speakers of Spanish in the health care profession
2. use generic Spanish to be understood everywhere Spanish is spoken
3. target the actual language used by nurses in their daily contact with patients
4. communicate using one-way communication
5. employ yes/no questions
6. improve student’s cultural and linguistic competence
7. set a foundation for further learning of Spanish

Specific Course Objectives

1. pronounce Spanish well enough to be understood by a native speaker
2. give commands to assist in everyday job activities
3. explain treatment regimens and options and the use of pharmacies and prescriptions
4. be culturally sensitive

1. pronunciation
2. greetings and goodbyes, communication strategies

5. calming the patient
6. assisting the physician’s exam by primary assessment and diagnostic questioning

Methods of Instruction/Course Format/Delivery

Instruction for this course will be achieved through the use of lecture, oral communication activities, discussion, oral quizzes, listening, reading, and Canvas.


1. students take an oral quiz every class day on the previous Spanish learned
2. students take an oral comprehensive final exam
3. teacher monitors and gives feedback on a daily basis
The grade for this course will be based on attendance, daily quizzes and a comprehensive final oral exam. All work is oral.
