Description:

Sophomore Music theory includes the second two semesters of the four semester sequence required of all music majors. In the first semester, students are introduced to chromatic harmony (secondary function, borrowed chords) and modulation.

The second semester is concerned with the other common types of chromatic harmony (Neapolitan, Augmented Sixth Chords), enharmonic modulation, Late Romantic harmony, and an introduction into musical form (binary and ternary).

All theory classes are offered in a variety of settings: traditional (face-to-face, Interactive Television (ITV), and as an online class. All theory classes will use WebCT as a class tool. To access WebCT, click on the icon below:

Grading Policy :

The semester grade is determined by the successful completion of all homework and exams. Homework will include material from the text as well as assigned analyses and compositions.

Attendance Policy: 

All students are expected to attend all classes and to report to class on time.  Students who miss more than four classes a semester will have their semester grade dropped by one letter for each succeeding absence. Students will be allowed to make-up missed work only in the case of an excused absence.
