Description:

Freshman Music Theory includes the first two semesters of a four semester sequence of music theory for music majors. In the first semester students will study music fundamentals (pitch recognition and notation in all clefs, interval recognition and construction, scale construction, triads and seventh chords, and principles of rhythmic notation), diatonic functions of traids and seventh chords, figured bass, and principles of voice leading.

The second semester is devoted to the study and analysis of diatonic harmony. Students will analyze major works from music literature and also compose exercises demonstrating the concepts studied.

All music theory classes are offered in a variety of settings: traditional (face-to-face, Interactive Television (ITV), and as an online class. All music theory classes use WebCT as a class tool. To access WebCT, click on the icon below:

Grading Policy :

The semester grade is determined by the successful completion of all homework and exams.

Attendance Policy: 

All students are expected to attend all classes and to report to class on time.  Students who miss more than four classes a semester will have their semester grade dropped by one letter for each succeeding absence. Students will be allowed to make-up missed work only in the case of an excused absence.
