GED testing info

Many adults who did not complete a high school program of instruction have continued to learn through a variety of experiences encountered in everyday life. The purpose of the GED Testing Program is to provide an opportunity for these individuals to have the learning acquired from such educational experiences evaluated and recognized. The GED Tests make it possible for qualified individuals to earn a high school credential, thus providing opportunities for hundreds of thousands of adults to:

  • Pursue higher education
  • Obtain jobs or job promotions
  • Achieve personal goals.

The Tests of General Educational Development (GED Tests) are internationally recognized. They have been designed to measure major academic skills and knowledge in core content areas that are learned during four years of high school. When an adult passes the 7-1/2 hour GED Tests battery, the resulting GED credential certifies that he or she has attained subject matter knowledge and skills associated with high school completion. The GED Tests battery includes the following subject area tests:

  • Language Arts, Writing
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Language Arts, Reading
  • Mathematics
The GED tests are offered at Panola College in English and Spanish.

GED Test Passing Score Requirements

ACE's Commission on Adult Learning and Educational Credentials sets the minimum requirements for issuing a GED credential. A standard score of 410 on each test and an average score of 450 for the five-test battery is the minimum passing standard.

GED Test Requirements

Panola College's GED Testing Department and Adult Basic Education Department recommends a student to first take the Official Practice Test (OPT) before testing on the Official GED Test.  For more information, please contact the Student Success Center at 903-693-2036.

Before each test administration, candidates are required to pre-register. The candidate may pre-register at any of the following sites for any test date, one week before each test:
--Panola College, Student Success Center, Carthage, Texas;
--Marshall Center (in the Marshall Mall), Marshall, Texas; and
--Shelby College Center or Shelby Regional Training Center, Center, Texas.

If the testing session is not filled, and it's less than one week before the desired test date, candidates may then pre-register at Panola College (Main Campus), Student Success Center, Carthage, Texas, only.

In most cases, a minimum of 5 candidates is required to conduct a testing session.

Pre-registration Pre-registration is required! Prospective examinees will need an acceptable form of photo identification (see Identification block below), a social security card, and must pay a minimum of $30.00 when they pre-register. The remaining $35.00 must be paid at least one week before the scheduled test date. Registration on the Carthage campus is done only  Monday  - Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. No registration is done on Fridays.
Identification All examinees must present identification with a photo and signature when they pre-register and on the day of the test. Acceptable forms of identification are a valid Texas driver's license, an official D.P.S. ID, a military ID, or a passport.
(All ID's are subject to approval of the Chief Examiner)
Social Security Number

An examinee's social security number will serve as his/her testing Identification Number. If you do not have a card, please bring something that verifies that the social security number you are using is correct (payroll stub, school records, etc.)
