2008 Volleyball News

8/22/08 - Fillies travel to San Jacinto Tournament:

The Panola College Fillies volleyball team traveled to Pasadena, Texas to compete at the San Jacinto Tournament.  The Fillies lost to host team San Jacinto College 14-25, 19-25, and 14-25.  Kourtney Adams and Luisa Rodrigues led the team with 5 and 8 kills respectively.    Panola will play Wharton at 2:00 pm.

The Fillies volleyball team wins their first match against Wharton College 25-10, 25-16, and 25-23.  The Fillies were led by Kourtney Adams with 13 kills, Luisa Rodrigues with 10 kills, and Brittany Fruge added 8 kills.  Kandace Sanchez led in assists with 14 while Cynthia Barros added 13 respectively.  On the defensive side, Rodrigues led with 15 digs, Adams added 11 digs and Brittany Fruge contributed 10. Lindsey Shipp had a match high 4 service aces while Megan Olivier added 3.  Panola plays Coastal Bend at 9:00 am and Galveston at 3:00 pm tomorrow.

8/23/08

The Fillies started off strong with a win over Coastal Bend 25-16, 25-8, and 25-22.  Kourtney Adams recorded her first double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs.  Cynthia Barros led with 13 assists while Kandace Sanchez added 10.  Lindsey Shipp contributed 15 digs on the defensive side; Luisa Rodrigues added 10, while Brittany Fruge and Megan Olivier added 8 a piece.  Panola will play Galveston at 3:00 pm.

After a close first game 26-24, Panola pulled out the match 26-24 and 25-20 over Galveston Community College.  “Today’s match was all about defense” says McCray.  We recorded a team high 64 digs against a powerful Galveston team.  Everyone contributed offensively and we are happy to finish this tournament 3-1 overall.  The fillies return to action on August 27, 2008 against Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas.

Jarvis Christian College to host Panola at Hawkins High School:

The Panola Fillies Volleyball team traveled to Hawkins, Texas to play Jarvis Christian College.  Despite a strong effort, Panola won 25-8, 25-14, and 25-9.  The Fillies return to action this weekend August 29-30 to participate in the Hill C0llege Tournament.

8/29/30

Panola travels to participate in the Hill College Tournament:

Panola started off strong with a win over host Hill College.  The Fillies were led by Brittany Fruge with 7 kills and 6 digs while Kourtney Adams added 6 kills and 7 digs respectively.  Cynthia Barros led the team in assists with 15 while Kandace Sanchez added 6.  After a slow start in game 2, the Fillies rallied back from a 10 point deficit to win the match 25-23.  “To win a tough match like this on the road says a lot about our teams’ character” added McCray.  “We showed a lot of heart and played hard which is what we want to do every time we step on the court”.   The Fillies next match is against Richland at 5:00 pm.

Despite a strong defensive effort, the Fillies five game winning streak continues with a win over Richland.  The Fillies held Richland to only three points winning 25-3 in game one and 25-8 in game two.  Lindsey Shipp added a tournament high 11 aces to finish the match.  Panola will play Northern Oklahoma at 10:30 am and conference foe Paris at 3:00 pm tomorrow.

The Panola College volleyball team extends its win streak with a win over Northern Oklahoma 25-8 and 25-14.  The Fillies were led by Kandace Sanchez with 10 assists and Cynthia Barros added 7 assists and a team high 3 blocks respectively.  Kourtney Adams led defensively with 15 digs while Lindsey Shipp added 7.  The Fillies face Paris at 3:00 pm.

The Panola College volleyball team finishes the Hill Tournament undefeated with a win over a strong Paris team 25-21, 25-15.  The Fillies were led by Luisa Rodrigues with 11 digs, 5 kills while Kourtney Adams added 6 kills, and Brittany Fruge added 8 digs.  The Fillies improve to 7-1 and will travel Tuesday for at tri-match at Temple.  The Fillies play Temple at 3:00 pm and San Jacinto at 5:00 pm.

Congratulations to Kourtney Adams and Brittany Fruge for making the All-Tournament team, and again to Brittany Fruge for being named Tournament MVP.

Panola travels to Temple for a tri-match against Temple and San Jacinto:

Due to Hurricane Gustav, the match at Temple has been cancelled.  The match will be made up Friday, October 17, 2008 against Temple only at 6:00 pm.     

9/4/08

Panola host Jarvis Christian College in first home match of the season:

Panola extends its win streak to nine consecutive matches with a win over Jarvis Christian College at Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.  Panola was led by Brittany Fruge with 11 kills 8 digs, while Kourtney Adams added 9 kills 13 digs.  Luisa Rodrigues and Lindsey Shipp added 15 digs apiece in the win.  Panola finished the match with a season high 24 aces on the night.  Rodrigues led with 7 aces, Shipp was close behind with 6, and Magda Dos Santos added 4, while Adams and Fruge added 3 and Dena Busse with 1 respectively.  Panola returns to action against 7th ranked Arkansas Fort-Smith on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 6:00 pm.

9/9/08

Fillies nine game win streak snapped by Arkansas Fort-Smith:

The Panola Fillies volleyball team saw its nine game win streak come to an end with a lost to Arkansas Fort Smith 16-25, 21-25, and 17-25 Tuesday night in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.  Despite a valiant effort, Panola fell short to a very good team.  “Tonight is a good match for us because they did a good job exposing our weaknesses,” McCray said.  “These are the kind of teams we want to play to help prepare us for conference.  We are going to watch film, see what we need to work on, and just use this as a learning experience to get better.”  The Fillies return to action Friday, September 12th in the NCTC Tournament in Denton, Texas.  The Fillies play NMMI at 10:00 am, North Central at 1:30 pm, and Seward at 3:00 pm.  Saturday’s schedule is TBA.

Fillies travel to North Central Texas College Tournament:

Panola played well against some great competition at the NCTC Tournament.  On Friday, despite a hard fought second set, Panola lost to #17 New Mexico Military Institute 17-25; 26-28.  The Fillies bounced back with a close win over NCTC 29-27, 28-26 and then lost to #18 Seward, 21-25, 11-25. 

9/13/08

Led by Luisa Rodrigues with 9 kills and 13 digs, the Fillies beat Seminole State 25-14, 25-16.  Kourtney Adams was close behind with 8 kills and a match high 17 digs.  With the win over Seminole State, Panola will face #17 ranked NMMI again in the Semi-finals.

Panola loses a close one to NMMI in three sets, 25-20, 25-27, 17-15.  Magda Dos Santos and Brittany Fruge led Panola with 10 kills a piece while adding 13 and 11 digs respectively.  “This was a very strong tournament for us.  All though we didn’t come out on top on paper, it definitely made us better by playing against some great competition each match.  Everyone contributed and played their roles well”.  Panola returns to action on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at home against Wharton at 2:00 pm.

9/20/08

Panola hosts Wharton College in third home match of the season:

The Fillies returned to action with a win over Wharton, 25-21, 25-9, and 25-14.  Brittany Fruge led all players with 13 kills and 20 digs, Kourtney Adams followed with 11 kills and a match high 21 digs and Magda Dos Santos was close behind with 9 kills.  Lindsey Shipp was strong on defense with 20 digs and 2 aces respectively.  “This is a good win for us because now we are starting to play with some discipline.  We worked a lot on blocking and playing defense behind the block last week and I really think it paid off”, says McCray.  Panola returns to action Friday, September 26 against Temple at 6:00 pm at Arthur Gymnasium.

9/25/08

 Panola hosts Temple College

 The Fillies volleyball team returns to action Friday, September 26th at 6:00 pm against Temple College.  Temple comes into the match with a six match win-streak under Head Coach Mary Reese.  “We’ve had two strong weeks of practice and I feel we have really come along way.  Temple is a great team and we are looking forward to a great match,” said McCray.  The Fillies enter the match with a 12-5 record.
