CARTHAGE — Panola guard Papa Oppong has signed a national letter of intent to play his final two years of college basketball at Eastern Kentucky.

Oppong was a Region XIV All-Conference selection, as well as a Region XIV All-Tournament selection. The 6-foot-4 swing man from Toronto, Canada, 15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals as a sophomore in his only season at Panola. Oppong played at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College as a freshman.

Panola coach Jacob Wonders believes Oppong has the physical tools to succeed at the NCAA Division I level.

"I think he's a great sign for Eastern Kentucky," Wonders said. "I think he'll be successful just because he's long and skilled and can score. He's a tough matchup. There's no doubt if you have success in this league, you can have success at that level."

Oppong shot 48.8 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from three-point range and 78.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Eastern Kentucky competes in the Ohio Valley Conference and reached the 65-team NCAA Tournament in 2007. The school is located in Richmond, Kent.

Wonders said Oppong also considered Idaho, Utah State, Colorado State and Murray State.
