Panola
lashes back, whips Bulldogs 14-8
The Panola Watchman
3/28/08
Panola showed Texarkana it knows a
thing or two about hitting and pitching, and a little about defense, too, as it
quit playing like an also-ran in the Eastern Conference of Region XIV for a 14-8
victory and a split of their doubleheader here Wednesday.
Maligned for their lackadaisical play in some previous conference outings and
downtrodden after a 14-2 loss to the Texarkana wall bangers earlier in the day,
the Ponies cracked 16 hits, including five by Cody Rogers, who hit for the cycle
plus an extra double.
Pitcher Mason Denson (4-3) worked five innings as the Ponies' winning pitcher
and stayed on to hit a homer and a single to drive in three runs.
Teammate Travis Reagan capped a fine performance with three hits in five chances
for three RBIs.
Jared Myrick, Brandon Choate Derrick Coleman, Shane Fry and Rocky Calhoun added
a hit to the Panola coffers with Fry going yard.
It was rather remarkable that four dingers left spacious Jim Reeves Field with a
win gusting to 40 m.p.h. blowing from south or southeast every moment after play
began.
But what other kind of weather has their been this spring as March came in like
a Lion and never quit roaring.
Denson retired six of the first nine batters he faced, stranding two runners at
second before the Ponies began to romp.
Choate opened the last of the second with a single and Rogers doubled him around
to score. Reagan singled and Coleman beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt for a hit
to load the bases.
Fry flied out but the rally continued when Kofi Osei-Anning walked to force in
Rogers. Jonathan Baker plated the third marker when he beat out a double play
chance with his good speed and hustle.
Texarkana used two hits, a two-base error and a three-run homer by David
Phillips to move ahead 4-3, when Denson closed the door by retiring seven of
the next nine he faced.
Roger's solo homer in the third made it a new game, 4-4, and a two-run tater in
the fourth by Denson had Panola in a gallop.
Baker, who walked three times, was on base before Denson launched his rocket.
Texarkana used two hits, a stolen base and a free pass to score a run in the
sixth as reliever Dan Martin took over for the Ponies. Erin Wilkerson had a
runner at third when he came for the bullpen, but the Ponies turned a double
play around the horn and held a 7-6 edge.
Fray's homer second homer of the season was really big in the last of the sixth,
igniting a six-run rally.
Calhoun came off the bench to single and Baker walked before Texarkana made a
pitching change. A walk to Jared Myrick, a run-scoring single by Denson, a
two-run single by Rogers and an infield out by Reagan for a run made it 13-5.
Texarkana would get two in the seventh and one each in the eighth and ninth, but
a triple in the eighth by Rogers and a single by Reagan would nail the lid on
Texarkana's chances of a comeback.
