Fillies falter, 67-65 to
Angelina in XIV
The Panola Watchman

KILGORE -
It might have been 3-for-26 shooting in the first half from three-point range
that took such a disastrous toll on Panola's desires to beat Angelina in the
first round of the Region XIV Tournament here Friday, but for sure it was a
missed, wide-open layup opportunity by Kim Edmonson just before the buzzer that
preserved a 67-65 defeat and sent the Fillies packing.
Panola (21-11) would trail by as much as 13 in the first half, but would close
to within nine at intermission.
In the final 15:39, there were four ties and six lead changes as Panola finally
got some treys to fall. The Fillies led 62-61 with two minutes remaining.
Angelina (21-10) then went on a 5-0 run to regain momentum. Chiquita Howard
nailed a jumper from the top of the key and Desiree Waller popped a trey to take
over.
Edmonson, the conference's No. 2 scorer, knocked down a triple from NBA range.
Shonderlette Paul missed a trey and then split a pair of free throws with 4.6
seconds remaining to leave the door slightly ajar.
Edmonson then sprinted through a two-player trap at mid-court and was unattended
when her shot came a little hard off the glass and fell off the front of the
rim.
The agony of defeat was excruciating.
Fillies' mentor Tracey Stellato dismissed any thought that Edmonson might have
fared better had she pulled up for a winning three-point shot.
"You are not going to beat anyone shooting 10-for-50 from behind the three-point
line," Panola Coach Tracey Stellato said, dismissing that discussion.
Her offense, from the start of the season, has been guard-orientated and
predicated on shooting the treys. It was a very exciting attack, especially when
mixed with excellent defense.
Kelsey Harris missed all three of her three-point shots, Melissa White was
0-for-10, Brittney Chaves went 0-for-1, Jasmine Brown 4-for-12, Casio Adams
3-for-7, Lauren Rust 0-for-1, Vedrana Milakovic 0-3 and Edmonson 3-for-14.
Angelina won the battle of the boards, 36-33, with Adams and Edmonson collecting
six each for the Fillies.
Lauren Rust had five assists.
PC scorers were White with six points, Brown with 12, Adams with 26 (11-for-17
goal attempts), Kayla Weaver with two, Milakovic two and Edmonson 17 (5-of-19).
