BATON
ROUGE – Panola jumped off the bus and into the middle of a six-run, first-inning
rally as it walloped 15 hits in a nine-inning victory over Baton Rouge C.C. here
Friday.
Friendswood freshman infielder Jared Myrick, 38th on the Region XIV hitting
chart, helped his average with four hits and three RBIs in five at bats from the
eighth spot in the Ponies’ batting order.
Hallsville freshman Shane Fry was three for six with three runs and two RBIs.
Jasper freshman Travis Regan, perhaps making a bid to play first base, was two
for six with two runs, two RBIs and nary an error.
In all, eight position hitters had at least one hit to give pitchers Scott
Copeland (4-0) and relievers Kory Cleveland and Chase Weir all the help they
needed.
Copeland, a sophomore from White Oak, worked four innings before coach Todd
Shelton had to get him in the fifth after one out.
He allowed just two hits and two runs, one of which was earned. He walked four,
including two on 10 pitches in the fifth.
Cleveland’s sheet was full of deuces: 2.2 innings, two hits, two walks, two
runs, two earned runs and two strikeouts.
It was 11-0 when he took over. He gave up a single to the first batter, and then
retired seven of the next eight.
He walked two, yielded a double, hit a batter and gave up two runs in the eighth
before Weir got the nod.
The freshman closer from Nacogdoches faced eight and retired six, yielding a
walk, a hit and no runs. There was just one hit in his stint.
Carthage freshman Jonathan Baker and Fry started the game with back-to-back hits
and Cody Rogers, another Hallsville freshman walked.
There were three errors and Reagan and Myrick singled as Panola leaped ahead 6-0
in the first.
In the second, Fry singled, there was an error and Choate doubled for two runs
and it was 9-0 after three when Myrick tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Yukon, OK freshman Ryan Davis.
Two walks, a stolen base by Myrick, a throwing error and a passed ball made it
11-2 in the fifth.
In the seventh, Davis walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Billy
Loveless, another Friendswood freshman.
Finally, Panola put five more runs on the scoreboard on hits by Choate, Myrick,
and Fry and a three-run homer by Rogers, his fifth of the season.
The victory was the 11th in 15 starts for the Ponies.
