Rhinoceros in the Q.M. Martin Auditorium

On November 9 and 10, at 8:00 pm, the Panola College Theatre Department will present Eugene Ionesco’s absurdist masterpiece, Rhinoceros, in the Q.M. Martin Auditorium. The show promises an evening of ideas and more than a few laughs.

One of the interesting facets of this production is that the scenic and costume design concepts are totally the work of student designers.  These elements make this a visually appealing performance.

The plot is simple.  A rhinoceros comes through a town and the citizens become obsessed with its power and freedom.  They then begin turning into a herd of rhinoceros.  Ionesco’s warning in Rhinoceros is as valid today as it was when it was written in the 1950s. Following the herd, he said, might just destroy the core of human society and its distinguished sensibility.

This piece is the Panola College Theatre Department’s entry into the Texas Community College Theatre Festival.  Many of the students will be competing for design, as well as acting awards.  “This is a wonderful chance to see the talent of these students,” said Professor Clay Grizzle.

The show starts at 8:00 pm each evening.  The cost is $4.00 per person and is free for students with a current Panola College ID.  For additional information contact Professor Clay Grizzle at 903-693-2064.
