TEXARKANA - It took Panola
starter Scott Copeland and relievers Kevin Humphrey and Branden Powell to retire
Texarkana in the bottom of the first inning of a Region XIV Eastern Conference
game here Saturday in a 16-6 loss.
It took Cory Williams and Kory Cleveland to finish, the latter giving up a hit
to the only batter he faced as the Bulldogs pushed across four markers in the
eighth to win on the 10-run mercy rule.
It took Panola just a short time to waste a 4-0 lead in the initial stanza and
after that the game belonged to the host team, which has won nine straight to
move into the conference lead ahead of Paris.
Bulldog starter Josh Gill battled through the Panola storm in the first and went
five innings to chalk up his sixth win.
Panola starter Scott Copeland (4-5) failed to register an out as he gave up two
doubles, a walk and two singles to fall behind 5-4. The Ponies had 11 hits
total, but wouldn't catch up Migel Alicea was three for four and Victor Luque,
Cody Jones and Taylor Davis were all two for five. Davis knocked in two runs. The
victories kept Texarkana (39-12, 18-6 XIV) a game ahead of Paris for first
place. Panola (25-26, 9-13) is out of the hunt.
