Panola College's Clayton McMillan, an NJCAA Region XIV All-Conference pitcher, signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves last week and will report to Kissimmee, Fla., next week.
McMillan, who went 4-3 with a 3.92 earned run average and 66 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings this season, helped lead the 2005 Carthage Bulldogs to a 37-4 record and the Class 3A state championship.
McMillan will be assigned to Atlanta's Class A minor league team — the Danville (Va.) Braves — after reporting next week.
McMillan pitched his freshman season at Texarkana College before transferring to Panola for the 2006-07 season. Atlanta selected the left-hander in the 17th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
"Clayton is a tremendous competitor when he is on the mound," said Panola coach Don Clinton. "With his talent he could possibly pitch in the big leagues one day."
McMillan joined teammates Ricky Gardner and Chad Sherman on the all-conference team. Gardner, a shortstop, has signed with Oral Roberts after leading Region XIV in batting average for five of the seven weeks during league play. Gardner hit .412 this season with 15 runs scored.
Sherman, a freshman from Bullard, led Region XIV with a 1.02 ERA during conference play, going 2-3 with 30 strikeouts in 35 innings. Sherman will return to Panola for his sophomore season.
Panola first baseman Taylor Davis has signed a national letter of intent with LSU. Davis, who also went 3-6 with a 5.10 ERA on the mound this season, hit .335 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs. As a freshman, Davis batted .392 with 13 homers and 49 RBIs and was selected to the all-conference team.
