COLLEGE RECEIVES Q. M. MARTIN PAINTING

Marvin and Carol Hall

Thursday night Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, accepted a Q. M. Martin water color painting of a Spanish-Mexican Mission from Dr. Marvin K. Hall and his wife, Carol. The presentation was held in the Q. M. Martin Auditorium during the Choir concert.

“Q. M. Martin was referred to me by a local general practice doctor in Carthage,” said Hall. “I found that he needed specialized eye care, and I was privileged to share in his care with my mentor, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Several years later he brought me this water color painting in appreciation. It gives me great pleasure to present it to Panola College for display in the building that bears his name.”

Powell, in expressing his deep appreciation to Dr. Hall, said, “I too think it is appropriate and fitting that this work of art be available for public enjoyment in the Q. M. Martin Auditorium.  We are grateful for this generous gift.”

Dr. Marvin Hall was born in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School. He attended SMU on a swimming scholarship. Later he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Carter, with whom he recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Hall also attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas before going on to serve a four year tour in the U.S. Navy.  While in the navy he interned at Balboa Hospital in San Diego, served as an anti-submarine warfare school physician and later as medical officer aboard the USS Prairie and USS Dixie with tours in Hawaii, the Philippines and Japan. Hall began his practice in 1967 at Pinecrest Eye Center in Marshall.

The Halls have four children and numerous grandchildren that include their daughter Kathy Cornelius and her children Daniel, Diane, Caroline and Carter; son Kenny Hall and his wife Terri and children Alise, Lauren, Tanner and Sawyer; daughter Kelly Cordray and her husband Greg and children Colby, Keaton, Cason, Collier and Kenley; and son Kelon Hall and his wife Dawn and their daughters Alden and Allison.

The painting donated by the Hall’s will be displayed in the Q. M. Martin Auditorium next to another of Martin’s works named “Carswell’s Barn”.
