Professor James Hallmark

HALLMARK NAMED EAST TEXAS EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

Professor James Hallmark, Panola College History Instructor, has been named “East Texas Educator of the Year,” by the Ottis Lock Endowment Committee of the East Texas Historical Association.  Hallmark will be presented the award and a $500 check at the ETHA’s annual conference scheduled on Sept 17, 2005 in Nacogdoches.

Hallmark, a native of Crockett, Texas and a former captain in the military earned both his bachelor’s degree and commission from Texas A&M University. His graduate work has come from The University of North Texas, Stephen F. Austin, and Texas Tech. He first began teaching for Nacogdoches ISD, then later for Angelina College in Lufkin.  In 1999 he began working for Panola College, where he has taught courses in Texas History, U.S. History, Western Civilization, and Government.

Hallmark also leads a popular Traveling Texas History Course, which has become a favorite with both students and community members throughout the area. He is known for bringing history to life with his many historical artifacts, costumes, and outside presentations. He has often said that his fascination with Texas History is personal, stemming from the fact that his family has been in this area since the early 1830s, participating in many of the key events that make our State’s history so exciting.  Presently, James and his wife, Angela, have one son and are expecting a daughter later this summer.

The East Texas Historical Association began in 1927, and exists to promote the study and awareness of East Texas History, and to honor those who do so.  Ottis Lock, a native of Angelina County, a teacher, and a member of the Texas Legislature for 30 years, maintained a lifelong interest in the history and heritage of East Texas. Through the generosity of his friends, the Ottis Lock Endowment has made possible a variety of awards, scholarships, and research grants for individuals who demonstrate excellence in promoting or educating the public about the history and culture of East Texas.  Congratulations to East Texas Educator of the year, James Hallmark.
