Camp Tenaha to Open Soon

Camp Tenaha, a summer day camp for children with special needs will be entertaining campers this summer on June 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Located in Tenaha, Texas, Camp Tenaha is hosted by New Destinations, Inc., a locally governed and managed non-profit organization that was created to provide educational and therapeutic services in an outdoor setting for disabled individuals of all ages.

“Camp Tenaha is truly a community-wide effort, said Cheri Lambert, Director of the Panola College Occupational Therapy Program.  “The camp counselors consist of occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students and licensed vocational nursing students from Panola College, occupational therapy (OT) students from LSU Medical Center’s occupational therapy program and OTA students from Tomball College in Houston, TX.  Students from these programs get to work hands-on with some very special kids and earn college credits at the same time.”

Camp Tenaha has a different theme each Saturday and offers campers a variety of activities that include horseback riding, canoeing, rock wall climbing, 4-wheeler riding. These and many other summer activities that would normally be “hands off” or “too dangerous” for handicapped children are made accessible and safe at Camp Tenaha.

Transportation to and from the camp is provided by Beckville ISD and lunch for the campers and volunteers is provided by local churches or other non-profit organizations.  Lambert smiled as she commented, “The whole community comes together to make Camp Tenaha a success, and we greatly appreciate the support.”
