Panola College-LSU collaboration aids disabled children
Graduate students in the Louisiana State University Medical Center (LSUMC) program will collaborate this summer with Panola College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students to aid disabled children. During June, 28 disabled and special needs children will participate in Camp Tenaha, an intensive therapeutic summer camp coordinated by Cheri Lambert, Panola College OTA program director.
LSU graduate students will evaluate all campers and develop individual plans for Panola College OTA student-counselors to follow during the month-long camp.
Our students will work directly with the kids and write progress notes that we will send to the LSU students for review and comment. To my knowledge, this is the first collaboration of its kind in the United States, Lambert said.
The collaboration will be enhanced by the creation of an Internet-based WebCT course that will allow students from LSU and Panola College to have online group discussion, communicate with each other via email, and share documents.
Camp Tenaha campers will also benefit from participation by Tomball College OTA students and graduate speech pathology students from Stephen F. Austin State University.
