PANOLA COLLEGE WINS $939,565 IN WORKFORCE TRAINING GRANTS

Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) officials will award Panola College almost one million dollars in Skills Development and Self-Sufficiency grant funds on Monday, Jan. 26. Chair Diane Rath of Austin, Commissioner Representing the Public for the TWC, will present the awards in ceremonies scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Shelby Regional Training Center (SRTC), 678 Roughrider Drive, Center.

The Skills Development Fund grant for $450,000 was written in partnership with 18 area businesses and entities. The funds will establish a program to train current workers and potential new hires in welding, hydraulics, computer technology, Command Spanish, electrical and other fields.

Area business leaders indicated a need for workforce training to maintain competitiveness in today’s global economy. The SRTC in Shelby County will be the site for 90 percent of the training provided through the Skills Development Fund grant.

With $489,565 in Self-Sufficiency grant funds, Panola College will establish a new program of child development association training for local child care providers. In addition, the grant will enable the college to continue its existing certified nurse aide training for area health care facilities.

Funds will pay for tuition, fees, certification exam costs and support services for students participating in the program. Self-Sufficiency funding provides assistance to economically disadvantaged residents who want to obtain the training and education required to enter the workplace and become self-sufficient.

“With almost one million dollars in funding, Panola College has an opportunity to make a positive impact on the regional workforce with much-needed and timely training and education,” said Dr. Gregory Powell, president.
