DR. A.N. NEWSOM
TILLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED
Recently an endowed scholarship in memory of Dr. A.N. Newsom
Tiller was established at Panola College.
A.N. Newsom Tiller was born July 3, 1904 in Carthage. A
lifelong resident of Panola County, he was the son of John William and Mary Jane Tillery
Tiller.
Dr. Tiller became a Methodist minister in 1934 and served 17 charges
in the United Methodist Church over a period of 51 years. In June 1984, he traveled to the
Holy Land. There he baptized 18 people in the Jordan River, which was a highlight of his
ministry. Another highpoint in his life occurred on May 13, 1985 when he married Ms.
Huelitt Biggs Chadwick. Dr. Tiller pastored Pisgah and Ebenezer Churches in Panola County
for a period of 17 years before retiring May 25, 1986.
Dr. Tiller was a member of the Texas Conference of Methodist Churches
and a member of the New World Association of Bible Students. He was also a master Mason of
Carthage Masonic Lodge No. 521 A.F. and A.M.
Ms. Huelitt B.Cariker created the endowment in honor and celebration of her devoted husband. Continuing his legacy of helping others, the Dr. A.N. Newsom Tiller Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to assist a deserving Panola College student. The selection and announcement naming the recipient will be made every spring.
