PLANS TO BUILD PONY STATUE SET IN MOTION

On September 8, 2003, Mrs. Lelia H. Davis presented Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College with a check for $1000 to begin preparations for the sculpting of a brass statue of a Panola Pony, to be located on the Carthage campus.

Mrs. Davis is the daughter-in-law of Dr. Sterling L. Davis, a member of the original Panola College Board of Trustees who served from 1947 to 1966. “I feel very close to the College,” said Mrs. Davis. “When I met my husband’s family for the first time, they were very excited about Panola College. Their enthusiasm was contagious and since then I have had a special place in my heart for the College. I am proud to be associated with this project”.

“I appreciate Mrs. Davis’ support for Panola College,” said Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College. “Her gift allows us to begin the first step in creating what promises to be a lasting work of art for our campus”.

The statue will be designed and assembled by world-renowned artist and sculptor, Bob Harness. Other works by Mr. Harness include the larger than life size bronze statue of Tex Ritter and his horse White Flash located in front of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, a statue of Martin Luther King for the City of Shreveport, and “Christ on Cross” for St. Mary's Catholic Church of Longview, Texas.
