PANOLA INSTRUCTOR
NAMED POET OF THE YEAR
The Rusk County Poetry Society recently named Professor Bernie
Bruster of Carthage Poet of The Year. The
Poet of The Year designation is a peer-selected distinction to the poet who
supports and promotes poetry in Texas and especially in the local poetry society.
Bernie has served as President of the society for the past two years
and will continue her service as Secretary for the organization. It is indeed a
privilege to have received this award from my poetic peers, said Bernie. I have learned and grown as a poet
because of my association with those who care to teach others. My favorite saying by Rogue Dalton is: Poetry, like bread is for everyone. I try to take my exposure as a Councilor for the
Poetry Society of Texas as an opportunity to introduce poetry everywhere I can. I appreciate the opportunity I have to teach
poetry within my Writing and Literature classes at Panola College. I find my students are surprised to find poetry
that is accessible. Especially when local poets come and read their work. Many Panola College students gain encouragement to
write their own poetry and then submit it for publication in our fine literary and art
publication called Intaglio. This
award-winning journal, published by Panola College becomes, for many students, the first
time they see their work (either artwork, short stories or poetry) in print. It gives me great pleasure to see the work
published and believe that this experience will encourage Panola graduates to become
life-long creative writers.
When asked about the award, Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola
College stated, Professor Bernie Bruster's recent recognition as Rusk County Poet of
the Year is quite an honor. Panola College takes great pride in her accomplishments
as a writer.
Bernie has published one collection of poetry and photography, which was co-authored with renowned Texas photographer, Charles Schuler of McKinney. She has also been selected to present a workshop on poetry together with Bessie Williams Simmons at the upcoming National Association of Poetry Therapy Conference in Miami in April.
