ONE LUMP OR TWO?

The third annual President’s High Tea was held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Gregory Powell on Wednesday, April 9, 2003.

Mrs. Powell, a native of Australia, was quite at home serving cucumber finger sandwiches, Earl Gray tea, and asking “one lump or two?”  Mrs. Powell served a selection of Australian “sweets,” that included Jaffas, Minties, Fantales, and Violet Crumble. Students also had the opportunity to sample vegemite. Vegemite to Australians is like peanut butter to Americans.

“High Tea originated as a British working class tradition. ‘High’ referred to the way it was consumed, standing at a counter or sitting atop stools in a teashop,” said Mrs. Powell. “Today, the tradition of High Tea offers one an opportunity for pleasant conversation, relaxation and of course a good cup of tea”.

The Tea at the President’s home was established by Mrs. Powell to honor the Panola College Green Jackets, the oldest service organization at Panola College.  Sponsored by Mr. Lynn Getsay, the Green Jackets serve as Ambassadors at many college functions.

Also honored at the event, were members of Circle K International (CKI) the college version of Kiwanis.  Professor Brenda Allums sponsors CKI and Marc Wilson is its president.
