JOIN US IN CELEBRATING TEXAS CULTURE

On April 4, 2002, Panola College and the B.F. and Mary Payne Fund for the Preservation of Texas Culture will present Dr. Archie P. McDonald’s production of  Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer: The Music of World War II,” followed by musical scores from the big band “The Sounds of Swing.”

Dr. Archie P. McDonald, a Professor of History at Stephen F. Austin University, will present a lecture and musical illustration of songs dating from 1939-1945. You will enjoy listening to such favorites as: “The Last Time I Saw Paris,” “The White Cliffs of Dover,” “Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer,” and “I’ll be Home for Christmas.” Additionally, Dr. McDonald will discuss Texas military training facilities, home front activities and Texans who became prominent during the war.

Following Dr. McDonald, The Sounds of Swing, a big band dedicated to spreading the gospel of big band music throughout the East Texas area will perform arrangements from such well-known orchestras as those of Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and others.

This event is made possible through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Foster Murphy who have established the "B.F. and Mary Payne Fund for the Preservation of Texas Culture."  Mr. Murphy is a veteran of WWII and it is the College's intent to recognize all veterans (but especially WWII veterans) during this event.

You are invited to come and relive this era of Texas History with us on April 4, at 7:00 p.m., in the Q. M. Martin auditorium. There will be no admission charge for this event. For additional information please call (903) 693-2044.
