LINCOLN AND MARY NELL
KING ENDOW
PANOLA COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
Lincoln and Mary Nell King have been educating East Texans since
1971. Mr. King gave his time and talents to the Gary Independent School District while
Mrs. King gave hers to Panola College. Because of their love of education and their desire
to help others succeed, they have decided to endow a scholarship at Panola College.
Mr. Lincoln King is a native of Portland, Maine and a graduate
of Brown University. After graduation, Mr. King joined the U.S. Army and saw action in the
Korean War. In 1971 he and Mary Nell moved to Carthage. He taught history for the Gary ISD
from 1971 until his retirement in May of 2001. In addition to teaching at Gary ISD, he was
also the advisor to the Loblolly Project. The Loblolly is an outstanding
publication and one that the citizens of Panola County point to with great pride. Mr. King
is still involved in education and serves as an active adjunct faculty member for Panola
College.
Mrs. Mary Nell King is a native Texan. She was born in Dallas
and earned her Baccalaureate degree from the University of Texas in Tyler and her Masters
degree in English from Stephen F. Austin University.
Mary Nell and Lincoln were married in 1957. In 1989, she began teaching at
Panola College. Mary Nell taught Composition and Rhetoric and British Literature from 1989
until her retirement in December of this year. Mary
Nell worked hard to bring art and culture to the campus. She sponsored trips to Europe and
was an advisor to the annual Panola College literary and art magazine, INTAGLIO.
Even though Mrs. King has retired, she will continue to instruct Panola College students
as an adjunct faculty member for the foreseeable future.
The Kings have two sons, Gerald King and his wife Bernadette of
Carthage, Texas and Eric King of Fort Worth, Texas.
The selection and public announcement naming the recipient will be
made in the spring each year. Applicants should contact the Panola College Director of
Institutional Advancement at (903) 693-2044.
