Nursing Program to Accept More Applicants

Traditionally, 21-24 applicants have been selected from a pool of over a hundred for admittance to the Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program at the Shelby College Center. This will soon be changing.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of LVNs is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2008 in response to the long-term needs of a rapidly growing population of very old people and to the general growth of health care."

To meet the need for highly trained LVNs, Panola College asked the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners for permission to increase the maximum allowed enrollment from 24 to 36 students at the Shelby College Center. The State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners consented and the change will take effect January 2002.

Mary Johannessen, lead instructor at Center commented, "We are now accepting applications for the January class of 2002. The deadline for applying is October 1, 2001. Information regarding testing and general information about the program can be obtained by calling the Shelby College Center at (936) 598-2715."
