Panola College holds first fall graduation
ceremony
Panola College recently held its Sixtieth Annual
Commencement Ceremony. However, this was the first Panola College fall
graduation ceremony. Graduation was held Friday, December 14, at 7 p.m. in
the Arthur M. Johnson Gymnasium. Margaret A. Medvedev was the commencement speaker. In 2000, Panola College hired Medvedev to be a professor in its Associate Degree Nursing Program. She taught Nursing Skills, Introduction to Nursing, Clinical Nursing to accompany Introduction to Nursing, Common Concepts of Adult Health, Complex Concepts of Adult Health, and Clinical Nursing to accompany Common Concepts of Adult Health. She left Panola College in 2007 and is now an independent contractor for Elsevier, Inc. |

More than games planned for Panola College Panola College professor Bob Wilkins was sure of two things after attending a series of game development conferences in Austin between 2006 and 2007. He knew the college needed a dedicated space for game developers to work together on projects that required personal interaction, he said. He also knew the college needed a lab to house the games and secure the equipment. As a result, the business and computer science professor proposed the creation of a video game development lab on the campus. Trustees approve Panola College library expansion Panola College's M.P. Baker Library will almost triple in size to accommodate the 1,900 or so students using the facility. The college's trustees voted last week to issue nearly $6 million in revenue bonds for an expansion. Tuition fees and money from auxiliary services were obligated to cover the cost of the bonds. The remainder will be raised by the Panola College Foundation. Constructed in 1965, the library spans about 11,800 square feet and provides services to about 1,900 students. Ex-PT standout named volleyball coach at Panola Former Pine Tree high school volleyball standout Nicole McCray was hired as the new head volleyball coach at Panola College in Carthage on Thursday. McCray, who graduated from Pine Tree High School in 1998, spent the past two seasons as head coach at Georgia Southern, which finished the 2007 season 10-21 overall and tied for seventh of 11 Southern Conference teams with a 7-11 league mark. Panola College Launches Video Game Development Lab Panola College Vice President of Instruction, Dr. Lillian Cook, recently approved a plan for a new Video Game Development Lab to be located in the Gullette Technology Building on the Carthage campus. One goal of the new lab is to foster cooperation between students across academic disciplines. Students interested in art, music, creative writing, and computer programming will be working on video game development projects. ETMC Carthage Contributes To College On November 27 Professor Kevin Rutherford, Division Director, accepted a $3,000 gift on behalf of Panola College from Mr. Gary Hudson, Administrator, East Texas Medical Center. Panola College Names New Baseball Coach On Monday, November 19, the Panola College Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Mr. Todd Shelton to be the College’s new head baseball coach. Shelton becomes only the fourth coach since 1956 to lead the Ponies. Shelton is a 1986 graduate of Conroe High School. Christmas in Carthage Begins Next Week The Panola College Pipers are hard at work on the 2007 Christmas in Carthage show, Winter Wonderland. McClellan Presents at
National Conference Karen McClellan, RN, MBA, CCRN, a nursing instructor at Panola College recently presented a research poster at the National Organization of Associate Degree Nursing (NOADN) conference. Her presentation was on “The Flight of the Non-Traditional Student” concerning the FLEX online nursing students. These students take all of the nursing classes online and have “flexed” clinicals in the evenings and on weekends enabling them to continue working. Her research demonstrated the success of this flexible offering. The conference was held in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 11, 2007. |

Veterans On Monday, November 12, a Veterans’ Day ceremony was held at Panola College. The US flag was lowered to half mast and faculty, staff, and students were provided an opportunity to remember friends and family who either had, or are currently serving in the military. Individuals with prior military service were asked to come forward to join the formation so their service branch could be properly recognized. Lunchbox Lecture Carthage, TX— Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (November 11–17 in 2007), GIS Day is a global event that celebrates geographic information system (GIS) technology, the innovative technology that uses geography to bring countless benefits to the world. In celebration of GIS Day, the Panola College M. P. Baker Library will sponsor its second annual GIS Day Lunchbox Lecture on Wednesday, November 14th at 12:00 p.m. in the Library. The event is free and open to the public. It will feature Dr. David Kulhavy, SFA Professor of Forest Entomology and Landscape Ecology and the keynote speaker will be Dr. Dan Unger, SFA Associate Professor of Remote Sensing and GIS. GPS units will be used for hands-on demonstration and there will be series of poster projects available at the event. |

100% First Time Pass Rate Panola College is proud to announce that all of the graduates from this year’s FLEX online nursing class passed their state boards with a 100% first time pass rate! Kristi Cook, Teresa Cofran, (front row), David Smith, Michele Plumlee, Michelle Bishop, and Scott Illingworth, (back row) earned their degree leading to an RN by taking all of their classes online and clinicals on weekends and evenings. First ADN Flex Class
Graduates Six students recently graduated from the FLEX Online option of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Panola College. These students were the first graduates of Panola College to earn the degree leading to an RN with all of their classes online. College names Don Clinton The Panola College Board of Trustees named Don Clinton to the position of Vice President of Student Services, effective October 22. Clinton currently serves as Director of Athletics and Head Baseball Coach. A graduate of Carthage High School, Clinton earned his Associate degree from Panola College. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana Tech University, majoring in education and psychology. Clinton completed his Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, majoring in counseling, kinesiology and education. The Vice President of Student Services leads student development professionals in support of the college mission, oversees housing and residence life, campus recreation, student activities and organizations, intercollegiate athletics, and all aspects of enrollment management from recruitment and admission to retention and graduation. Clinton, a lifelong resident of Panola County, is a member of the Carthage Noon Lions Club and the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department. He serves as a board member and commissioner for Dixie Youth Baseball and is a member of the City of Carthage Parks and Recreation Committee. Clinton and his family are members of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Each year the ETMC Women’s Auxiliary requests applications for nursing scholarships and selects deserving students to receive money to help them with school expenses. LUNCHBOX LECTURE TO FEATURE MR. BOB BOWMAN The M. P. Baker Library, in cooperation with the Panola College Liberal and Fine Arts Department and the B.F. and Mary Payne Fund for the Preservation of Texas Culture, proudly present an East Texas colloquy with noted historian and author, Mr. Bob Bowman. Mr. Bowman and his wife, Doris, have written 37 books and won numerous awards. Mr. Bowman is a member of the Texas Historical Commission and former president of the East Texas Historical Association. He has served on the Texas Sesquicentennial Commission and the Texas Capitol Centennial Commission. Mr. Bowman has been referred to as “the people’s historian” because his writings reflect down-to-earth East Texas history—forgotten towns, good ol’ boy expressions, historic murders, unusual cemetery markers, home remedies, and other subjects beloved by East Texans. Child Safety Seat Check October 10, 2007 during the health fair at Panola College, representatives from the College’s Emergency Medical Services Program will be conducting child safety seat checks from 8 am till 12 noon. Seats will be checked free of charge. Parents should have the child and seat with them for proper fitting. Parents should also be prepared to spend a minimum of 20 minutes and sometimes longer with the technician. Seats will be checked for proper installation, correct child size, recalls, age and damage. We will have a few booster seats for children over 40 lbs that we will give away for free, child must be present. The checkup event will be held at the Carthage Campus, 1109 W. Panola, in the parking lot in front of the Q. M. Martin auditorium. WOODS SELECTED TO CHEER FOR AMERICA’S TEAM Irving, Texas, July 31, 2007 --- Auditions for the 2007-2008 squad of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were conducted earlier this spring at Texas Stadium, with over 1,000 women competing to become a select member of America’s Sweethearts. From this group, an exclusive squad of 38 women was selected to represent America’s Team for the 2007-2008 football season. After 12 weeks of arduous fitness training and demanding dance rehearsals, these ladies proudly donned the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders famous star spangled uniform for their first official appearance on August 9, 2007 in a pre-season game against the Indianapolis Colts. Natalie Woods joined the squad as one of 18 rookies who will be wearing the DCC uniform for her first season. Woods, a 32 year old Conroe, Texas native, is a 1997 graduate of Panola College. College Foundation to Host Auction The Making Dreams Come True 2007 auction is scheduled for October 13, at 6:00 pm. at the Panola College Ballroom. Hosted by the Panola College Foundation, the evening will feature auctioneer, Mr. Jack Dillard, and will include live and silent auctions, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and musical entertainment. In 2007 the Foundation provided financial support to the College’s health sciences division by assisting with the purchase of Respondus and Studymate software. The software is used in distance learning labs and enables instructors to give secure online tests. The foundation also purchased 40 new task chairs for the LVN department and computers and workstations for the ADN program. Scholarships established through the Foundation were also awarded to students who needed assistance with tuition and fees, books, or room and board. Fall Concert Scheduled for October The Panola College Choirs will have their Fall Concert on Thursday, October the 11th at 7:00 pm. The event, held in Q. M. Martin Auditorium, will feature both the Panola College Chorale and the Panola Pipers. Continuing Education: Beginning Guitar Class A Beginning Guitar Class will be offered by the Panola College Workforce and Economic Development department, beginning Tuesday, September 4. The class will run for five weeks from September 4 to October 2. It will be from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, and will be held in the choir room of the Raymond Rhea Fine Arts Building. The cost is $50 per person. The class is designed for the person who always wanted to learn to play guitar, but never did. The course class will cover an introductory approach to the beginning basics of playing chordal guitar. Panola College’s First Oilmen’s Clay Shoot A
Success Prairie Creek Sporting Club was the location of Panola College’s first annual Oilmen’s Clay Shoot. A total of 228 shooters making up 46 teams participated in the event which netted over $21,000 for the PC Petroleum Technology program. Dr. Joe Shannon, Dean of Instruction at Panola College, stated, “the Oilmen’s Clay Shoot was a great success. This was a great opportunity for Panola College to meet and discuss our Petroleum Technology program and have fun out in the environment. Memory of Mrs. Lelia H. Davis On September 8, 2003, Mrs. Lelia H. Davis presented Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, with a check to begin preparations for the sculpting of a bronze statue of a Panola pony. Her vision started the process that eventually led to the creation of the statue that adorns the main campus. A bench located next to the Spirit of Panola statue has been dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Davis by her family. Mrs. Davis’ grandsons, Russell Davis and Jonathan Davis posed next to the plaque that reads, “In Honor of Lelia H. Davis, Philanthropist and Teacher - So that others might pause and reflect.” |

Panola's Whatley signs with Bethune-Cookman CARTHAGE — Panola College's Dominique Whatley has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Bethune-Cookman University. Whatley, a 6-5 guard/forward who started the majority of the Ponies' games during the 2006-07 season, becomes the third Pony basketball player to sign with an NCAA Division I school this offseason, following C.J. Clark (Ball State) and David Burrell (Texas Southern). Whatley averaged 10 points per game while shooting 42 percent from the field, 32 percent from 3-point range and 73 percent from the free-throw line as an honorable mention All-Region XIV honoree. Continuing Education Classes The Office of Workforce and Continuing Education has announced non-credit courses to be offered on the Panola College Carthage campus. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. Interested individuals should call 903-693-4650. EMT Basic – This course will provide the student with skills to function as an EMT. After successful completion of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion which will qualify them to take the National Registry Exam.
