Art Class Completes New Mural

Professor Ann Boland and her Drawing Class at Panola College recently completed a mural in the Phoebe Sue Perlman Student Center. Located in the snack bar, it depicts scenes from around campus and the city of Carthage.
“This project started when Katherine Mathis from Sodexho Campus Dining asked if we could put a mural on the wall depicting Panola College,” said professor Boland. “The class agreed, and we started the design process. Heidi Pritchett came up with the general concept while Jennifer Hagan, Erin Spinuzzi, Brandi McIwain, Christian Nichols and Brenda Townsend put together ideas and helped draw and paint the design. We tried to show many of the different areas of study and interests of Panola students.”
TYSON SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

Five Panola College students received scholarships from the Tyson Foundation for the 2005-06 school year. Tommy Young, Director of Financial Aid said, “We appreciate the support the Tyson Foundation has provided to our students through these scholarships. Each scholarship is valued at approximately $800 and will be applied toward the cost of tuition, fees and books. Tyson has truly been a good corporate neighbor, and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
This years scholarship recipients are: Ruby Abercombia - Shreveport, LA; Amanda Chaviers – Nacogdoches, TX; Marlene Diaz – Center, TX; Simeon Ngishu – Carthage, TX; Stacy Oliver – Carthage, TX.

On November 28, the Panola College Pi Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa conducted its fall initiation. The ceremony was held in the College’s Texas Room and was attended by friends and families of the 10 inductees.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international fraternity that recognizes junior and community college students who attained high scholastic achievements. Membership is by invitation to those who qualify.

Christmas Candlelight Concert at Panola College

The Panola College Concert Chorale will present a Christmas Candlelight Concert on Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00 pm in the Q. M. Martin Auditorium. The concert will be a reverent celebration of the reason for the season. “The Chorale will perform many Christmas favorites to which the audience may sing along,” said Professor Sarin Peck, Instructor of Vocal Music and Director of Choirs. “This will be an event for the entire family and I invite everyone to join us as we start the Holiday Season with some of our most treasured and traditional Christmas music. The students have practiced diligently for this concert and are excited to be performing for the public.” Tickets are available at the door for $2.00 for students, $5.00 for adults, and will be free for those with a valid Panola College ID. Personal Digital Assistants: Your Mobile Future

The M. P. Baker Library, in cooperation with the National Library of Medicine, will present a lunchbox lecture on December 9, 2005 on the use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA’s). The trainer, Mr. Greg Bodin, is the Technology Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of the NLM South Central Region and currently works for the Houston Academy of Medicine. He is responsible for providing Internet and technology instruction and support to medical librarians and health professionals within a five state region as well as training and outreach for a variety of National Library of Medicine programs and services. Mr. Bodin has 11 years of experience as a librarian and eight years of experience as a medical librarian. He received his Master of Library and Information Science degree from Louisiana State University and is a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
The lunchbox lecture will be held in the PIT Lab of the Library from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A light lunch will be served an hour before the session. The event is free and open to the public. On December 1, 2, and 3, the Panola College Pipers will present their annual Christmas in Carthage Show. This year’s dinner theatre event, One Magic Christmas, takes a journey through some of the favorite Christmas classics with a few newer holiday tunes mixed in. A great meal combined with fabulous entertainment and a visit from a famous holiday personality promise to make this a special evening for the entire family.
The event begins with dinner being served at 6:30 each evening in the Panola College Ballroom, followed by the show. Tickets are $12.00 for students and $15.00 for adults, and should be paid in advance to hold a reservation. On November 7, 2005, Panola College band student, Joy Jacobs, picked the winning ticket for this year’s Panola College Foundation Fundraiser. John and Walta Cooke won dinner for up to ten guests to be served in their home by Mrs. Cyndi Rutherford, Director, Sodexho Food Service.
“The Panola College Foundation has been very busy this year,” said Van Patterson, Director of Institutional Advancement. “Over the past 13 months they have collected over $450,000 in gifts and pledges for the M.P. Baker Library Expansion Project, and donated $4,000 from unrestricted funds so that a mold of the Panola Pony statue could be created.”
“This year’s fundraising theme was ‘Helping Dreams Come True,’” said Patterson. “Thanks to the generosity of folks such as the Cookes, we were able to raise just over $5,800. Because these funds are considered unrestricted, the Foundation can use them to support the College in a variety of areas.”

Panola College held a reception Sunday afternoon to thank major contributors to the M. P. Baker Library expansion project, recognize the hard work and efforts of the Panola College Foundation Board, and to enjoy fellowship as a group who has joined together to accomplish a goal.
Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, Mr. William Goolsby, Chairman of the Panola College Board of Trustees, and Mr. Dave Gorrie, Chairman of the Panola College Foundation Board, all made brief remarks concerning the progress of the capital campaign. Then the approximately 100 guests enjoyed an extensive selection of hors d’oeuvres, caught up with old friends, and met new ones, and overall had a very good time. Guests were also offered tours of the new residence halls recently completed at the main campus.
Gifts and pledges to the M. P. Baker Library expansion project currently stand at just over $461,000. The College continues to accept donations for this project, and naming opportunities are still available. Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, receives a $1,000 donation from Jack and Patsy Reeves for the M. P. Baker Library expansion project. Jack played linebacker for the Ponies in 1948 and 49. He sported the number 53 on his jersey. Over the years Mr. Reeves has also served as a Panola College Alumni Association Board Member.
Jack and Patsy married in 1953. They have two sons, Randall Guy and Michael Scott, and one daughter, Jacwalyn Patricia. All three attended Panola College.
Jackson to Perform at Music Club Fundraiser

The Carthage Federated Music Club will present Keron Jackson in concert on Tuesday, November 8, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. at St John’s Episcopal Church. Keron, a former Panola College student and popular entertainer in the Carthage area, is currently a student at Baylor University in Waco. While attending Panola College, he played the role of Jim in the Broadway musical, ”Big River,” was a soloist in the community Christmas production of “The Messiah,” and sang several one person concerts. Panola College Rodeo Team Riding High

The Panola College Rodeo Team has started the fall season riding high. The Men’s Team is currently seeded #1 in the Southern Region after the first two events, and the Women’s Team is seeded #4. The Panola Ponies finished second in Northeast Texas Community College Rodeo this past weekend and also finished second in the first rodeo of the season at Sam Houston State University. COLLEGE HEALTH FAIR SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER

Panola College’s Associate Degree Nursing program will host its 5th Bi-Annual Health Fair on October 26, from 7:30 a.m. to noon in the Arthur Johnson Gymnasium located on the Carthage campus.
Door prizes will be given, along with free refreshments, blood pressure checks, and fasting blood sugar tests. Lab and cholesterol checks will only be done from 7 to 9 a.m. Blood sugar tests will be done only at 7:30 a.m. A 10-hour fast is required prior to having these tests done.
Businesses attending with booths include: the Carthage Police Department, fire safety experts, self-defense specialists, Dr. Dennis Golden optometrist, Dr. Joel Hill with neck scans, and Dr. Brooks, chiropractor, the Humane Society plus many others.
An EMS ambulance will be set up for attendees to peruse, and the Stewart Regional Blood Center will be on hand in the College ballroom for those who would like to make a donation. All age groups are invited to attend. For more information call 903-694-4000.

Eaton Organizes Effort to Raise Funds for Hurricane Relief

After hearing that over 1,600 of his fellow employees had been displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Sodexho Campus Services employee and Panola College student, Michael Eaton, collected $2,200 in donations for the American Red Cross. Eaton, an eagle scout from Boy Scout Troup 268, organized his friends and fellow scouts to collect funds to be used for temporary housing, food, and relocation of employees and their families.
“We are extremely proud of Mike for his commitment to helping his fellow employees, and are very grateful that the community has been so generous” commented Cyndi Rutherford, Unit General Manager. “Sodexho is going to match 100 percent of the donations collected by Michael and his friends so that evacuees will receive a total donation of $4,400.”

Panola College Computers to Aid Evacuees

Mr. Kevin Roper, a pastor working with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, recently asked Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, if the Red Cross and FEMA could borrow six computers to be used at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview. The computers will be used by hurricane evacuees to get on the Internet so they can fill out FEMA forms, search for lost family members, complete insurance claim forms, look for work, and communicate with friends.
Dr. Powell agreed and on Friday, September 9, 2005, Mr. Allen West, Director of Computer Services, and the entire Panola College Information Technology Services department pitched in to help fill Roper’s request. Mr. Roper insisted that the College include a banner that he could place above the computers in the Maude Cobb Center so that evacuees would know of the College’s generosity.

Head Volleyball Coach Dan Nowalk and the Panola College Fillies volleyball team recently kicked off their season with a second place finish at a tournament hosted by UT Brownsville on South Padre Island. The Fillies started off slow and had many ups and downs, but in the end they finished strong. The community is invited to attend the first home match scheduled for September 15, against Wharton at 6 p.m. in the A.J. Gym. The Panola College Student Occupational Therapy Assistant (SOTA) club is collecting supplies and money for families and animals displaced by the hurricane. Items can be brought to the Health Science Center lobby. “Delivery is very easy,” said Cheri Lambert, Director of Panola College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. “Just pull up in front of the Health Science Building and put your contribution inside the front door. We have lots of boxes ready to collect the donations. Relief agencies are telling us they have an ongoing need for supplies.” Cash or checks made payable to The American Red Cross should be delivered to the LVN Office which is located just to the right, as you enter the Health Science Center. On August 10, Mr. and Mrs. Hermon Reed presented Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, with a check for $1,000 to be used to help expand the M. P. Baker Library.
“I would like to thank the people in Panola County for the support they have given me over the past 38 years. I am especially touched by the generosity of those who have contributed to the Boys and Girls program,” said Reed. “This gift will help ensure that when those boys and girls are ready to go to college, there will be a properly equipped, local community college for them to attend.”
Mr. and Mrs. Hermon Reed have always strived to improve the educational opportunities available to children living in Panola County. Mr. Reed taught mathematics and science courses for 37 years at Carthage ISD and served a 12 year tenure on the Panola College Board of Trustees. He currently represents Panola County on numerous state and local boards, is an accomplished cattle rancher, and is currently Commissioner of Panola County Precinct 3. Mrs. Shirley Reed has also dedicated her life to the field of education. She has been an instructor for Carthage ISD since 1961. The Reeds have two children, Rhonda Reed Moore an instructor with Marshall ISD, and Hermon Reed, III of Dallas, and two grandchildren, Tayler and Victor Moore, Jr.

Joe is a former Panola College History Professor who retired in the spring of 2004 after spending 34 years in the classroom. Janelle served as the tax assessor for Elysian Fields ISD for 2 years and Beckville ISD, part-time, for six years. She retired from the Panola County Tax Office in 1996. The Houghs have four children, B.J. Hough of Broken Bow, OK, Helen Wilbanks of Arlington, Sherry Jones of Carthage, and Lisa Hoekwater of Austin, all of whom attended Panola College in the 1980’s.

Construction of Panola College’s new 96 bed student apartment complex is proceeding well. When complete, the apartment complex will be home to three new 6000 sq. ft. buildings and 49 additional parking spaces.
The two-story structures each contain eight apartments. A student apartment contains two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a central living area. When complete, each apartment will have a cable TV hookup and a telephone jack in the central living area and two telephone jacks and two internet access points, two closets, two beds and two dressers in every bedroom.
“We are very pleased with the progress we’ve made and are confident that all three buildings will be ready in time for students to move in this fall,” said Louis Johnagin, Vice President of Fiscal Affairs. “We know that parents are always concerned about their children’s safety and would like them to know that in addition to installing security lighting around the parking lots and buildings, we have included a fire suppression sprinkler system in every room.

Kids’ College 2005 is a summer enrichment program for students who will be completing grades Kindergarten through sixth this spring. The curriculum has been developed to offer courses for introduction and enhancement rather than for in-depth study. The full-day format is designed to accommodate the needs of working parents. Kids’ College staff will be at the drop off/pick up area between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. and between 4:45 and 5:15 p.m. only. Parents may still register their children for half-day classes, if preferred.
Registration Fee:
$100 for full-day classes
$75 for half-day classes
When one child is registered at the full rate, siblings may receive a 25% discount.

Mr. Clarence Chadwick will be the commencement speaker at this year’s Panola College graduation ceremony. The event is scheduled for Friday, May 13, at 8:00 p.m. in the Arthur M. Johnson Gymnasium.
Mr. Chadwick has been employed by the Grocers Supply Co., Inc. for 45 years where today he serves as Senior Vice President. The Grocers Supply Co., Inc. is the largest independent wholesale grocery supply company in the world servicing more than 650 grocery stores, 1,200 convenience stores and 200 schools in a 350 mile radius of Houston. Their fleet consists of over 200 tractors, over 700 trailers and more than 2,000 employees.
Mr. Chadwick was born in Carthage, Texas in a little community called Holland’s Quarters. He is married to Glendell Chadwick and has three daughters and one step-daughter.

On May 4, Panola College celebrated the careers of Professors Larry Brumley and Bruce Richmond at its annual retirement ceremony. During the luncheon many long-term employees were also recognized for their contributions to the College. Those with 10 years of service include Al Alexander, Shannon Baker, Darrell Hudson, Karie Lindsay and Sheila Ritter. Employees with 15 years of longevity are Ann Boland, Carolyn Lawson, Ann Morris and Karon O’Neal. The 2005 edition of Panola College’s annual art and literary publication, Intaglio, is now on sale in the College Bookstore. This, the 10th edition of Intaglio, is a compilation of writings and art created by Panola College students, alumni, and faculty.
Faculty sponsors Jeff Brooks and Ann Boland agreed that Wes Smith, Editor, produced another quality magazine this year. They also praised Lisa LeJeune for her work as the art editor and creator of the cover art of this year’s publication. Smith is a sophomore from Marshall and LeJeune, a sophomore from Carthage, Texas.

Thursday night Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College, accepted a Q. M. Martin water color painting of a Spanish-Mexican Mission from Dr. Marvin K. Hall and his wife, Carol. The presentation was held in the Q. M. Martin Auditorium during the Choir concert.
“Q. M. Martin was referred to me by a local general practice doctor in Carthage,” said Hall. “I found that he needed specialized eye care, and I was privileged to share in his care with my mentor, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Several years later he brought me this water color painting in appreciation. It gives me great pleasure to present it to Panola College for display in the building that bears his name”...more

Recently, the Panola College Health Information Technology Students Association (HITSA) had a garage sale in the parking lot of the Health Science Center. The club’s goal was to raise money to be donated to the M. P. Baker Library expansion project. On April 21, Professors Sandy Payne and Kathleen Schultz and HITSA members presented Mr. Van Patterson, Director of Institutional Advancement, with a check for $200 to be used to make the project a reality.
Amanda Thompson, President of HITSA proposed the idea of raising money to help pay for the library expansion. The club adopted the project and set about making the event a reality. Students collected items, advertised, and held a successful fundraising event. Professors Payne and Schultz were both proud and commented, “The club members really worked hard to earn the money.”

Nine Panola College student athletes have been selected to the Region XIV Athletic Conference All Academic Team.
To earn a place on this prestigious team, student athletes must complete a minimum of three college semesters, earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, complete a minimum of 36 college hours, and participate at the varsity level in at least one season in the NJCAA.
Panola College volleyball players include Rachelle Aupperle, Saskatchewan, Canada; Valerie Haven, Robstown, Texas and Jo-Ellen Felton, Killeen, Texas.
Panola College women’s basketball players include Deborah Heke, Auckland, New Zealand and Joanna Clayton from Lancashire, England.
The Baseball Team supplied the greatest number of inductees that include Philip Lynch, Beaumont, Texas; Aaron Cook, The Woodlands, Texas; Elliott Roberts, Conroe, Texas and Derek Shaw of Benton, Louisiana.

Rodriguez to Speak at Lunchbox Lecture

The M. P. Baker Library of Panola College cordially invites the community to attend their next Lunchbox Lecture, “Man in Spacesuit”. The lecture will feature Mr. Manuel Rodriguez of NASA.
Born in Eagle Pass, Texas, Mr. Rodriguez received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University. He began working for NASA in 1965 where he worked on the Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, and International Space Station programs.

Panola College will be holding a reception for individuals who wish to be considered for positions as adjunct instructors for the Carthage, Marshall or Center locations, for both credit and non-credit courses. The reception will be held from 5:30 - 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 3, in the Ballroom of Panola College-Carthage. FOLSOM, Calif. -- The top 10 digitally-savvy community colleges for 2005 have been named by the Center for Digital Education (Center) and American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). A ranking was established based on their second Digital Community Colleges Survey, which examined how colleges are deploying technology to streamline operations and better serve their students, faculty and staff.
More than 200 community colleges across the country participated in the survey. Colleges were grouped into three categories based on city and student population. In the large/urban category, two colleges share the first-place position: St. Petersburg College in Florida and York Technical College in South Carolina. In the mid/suburban category, Indian River Community College in Florida earned the top position. Mr. Gary Kitmacher, from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, has assembled the best images from space flight and will discuss how they have been used to better understand our universe, our world, and life on earth.
Mr. Kitmacher will also discuss the contributions that Texas and Texans made to America’s Space Program that helped make these fantastic images possible.
