AAS- Medical Laboratory Technician

Graduates of this program will receive an Associates of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology and be eligible to sit for the national qualifying examination for certification and/or registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician from ASCP or AMT. Issuance of the MLT AAS is not contingent upon students passing external certification exams.

What do MLTs do?

Medical Laboratory Technician

Courses in Medical Laboratory Technology, also known as Clinical Laboratory Science, prepare the student to work in the laboratory to analyze blood, body fluids and tissues using high-tech equipment. This two-year program prepares the student to perform laboratory procedures to aid the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Medical Laboratory Technicians work in hospitals, clinics and research laboratories.

HOW TO APPLY

  1. Fill out the MLT application.
  2. Submit your application to Mrs. Russell at jrussell@panola.edu.
  3. Apply to and be accepted to Panola College.
  4. Have your official college transcripts (if any) sent to the Panola College Registrar.
  5. After being accepted to the MLT program, make an appointment to be advised (and get registered for classes) by Mrs. Russell.

Practicum Experiences

MLT students will participate in two practicum/clinical experiences during their second year.  Students must have a minimum of a "C" in all previous MLAB courses to be assigned to a practicum experience. (See program outcomes for details). These experiences will take place in a hospital setting (placement will be determined by instructor). Practicum I will consist of no less than 40 hours. Practicum II will consist of no less than 15 hours.  Student will be responsible for physical exam, drug screen, immunizations, and any other pre-clinical requirements (including costs) of the clinical site. Student will be responsible for transportation to and from clinical site.

MLT students will also have the opportunity to become certified phlebotomists during their first year of study, if they desire (student must complete required sticks and clinical hours and successfully pass the national certification exam).
