Why do we celebrate Black History Month?

Black history month was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. Woodson chose the month of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social conditions of African Americans: former president Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. While there have been many accomplishments in African American history, there should not be a month set aside to dedicate the history of one race.

For years, the month of February has been used by African Americans to show our contributions to society. Keep in mind that during the time of the holiday's inception, America was still going through much racial tension. I am in no way saying that racism no longer exists. In fact, we have a long way to go before we reach that period of time in which all racial differences are suppressed. But as a country, in order to move forward, we must abandon our past and focus on the future and moving forward.

The racial era of America was hard not only for African Americans, but for many other races. But what does holding on to the hurt and pain experienced during these times by highlighting certain individuals who overcame adversity do for our race? Absolutely nothing.

Today, the majority of this country has moved past petty differences in race. To designate a certain month for a certain race is only halting our progress towards an America full of different and rich cultures.

Though we are the United States of America, celebrating Black History Month only divides us. America is a nation with a rich history from many different backgrounds and that history needs to be exposed throughout the year.

Stories of two separate Americas need to cease being told. We need to stop celebrating certain races and open the book of one America with a rich multicultural history.
