![]() Myrna Hook, former Panola College music teacher, passed away Saturday. Funeral services for Myrna Smith Hook, age 87, of Carthage, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The services will be held at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. William Everett officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hook passed away on Saturday night, Oct. 15, 2011, in Carthage. Myrna Irene Smith Hook was born on Jan. 5, 1924, in Moorhead, Miss., to Robert Edward Smith, Sr. and Vera Irene Lee Smith. She graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1940. She attended Dodd College in Shreveport and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music from Baylor University. She married William Edward “Bill” Hook on Oct. 26, 1945, in Carthage and he preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1999. Mrs. Hook taught music in Kilgore, Sweeney, and Round Rock before moving to Carthage where she taught in the Music Department at Panola College for 30 years until her retirement. She taught piano lessons at her home to countless students throughout the years. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and her love for music allowed her many opportunities to play at different venues around the county including the Silvertones, Panola College plays, musicals, and choir performances, Sunday school, weddings, funerals, and the Miss Panola County Pageant, just to name a few. She was a member of the Carthage Book Forum, the Carthage Music Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher’s Sorority. She moved to Carthage in 1952, from Round Rock and was a member of the Central Baptist Church where she played the organ for many years, was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class, and served as interim music director for a short period of time. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Edward Smith, Jr. Mrs. Hook is survived by two sons, Scott Hook and wife Linda of Carthage and Brian Hook and wife Sandy of Center; one daughter, Kristi Koonce and husband Keith of White Oak; and six grandchildren, Jennifer Hook Showers and husband James, Justin Hook, Matt Hook, Clayton Koonce, Travis Koonce and wife Kasie, and Kristin Koonce. Serving as pallbearers are Justin Hook, Matt Hook, Clayton Koonce, Travis Koonce, and James Showers. Serving as an honorary pallbearer is Ted Anderson.
