MISSION
The purpose of the M. P. Baker Library of Panola College is to be an
academic Learning Resource Center for the students and faculty of the College, as the LRC
staff strives to offer resources and services, when and where they are needed, to enhance
the development of the whole student, and to offer opportunities for students to become
life long learners.
The LRC supports the further achievement of the mission and the goals
formulated by this institution. This LRC staff endeavors to provide the most efficacious
match of services and resources to satisfy the needs of its users. To this end, the M. P.
Baker Library Staff will strive:
To insure that adequate library and learning resource services are
available to all faculty members and enrolled students.
To select, purchase and maintain quality materials that are relevant to
the curriculum and user needs.
To make library materials accessible and available to students and
faculty.
To provide an orientation program and reference services that empower
Panola College library users to access bibliographic information and other learning
resources, in order to become long life learners.
To provide a well organized collection, adequate physical facilities,
modern equipment in good condition, interlibrary loan service and an efficient and
appropriate circulation system.
For all librarians, teaching faculty and students to share in the
development of the collection.
To incorporate technological advances into the library and other learning
resource operations.
To hire adequately trained library professionals and staff.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Students, faculty and staff of Panola College and residents of the Panola College
District are invited to use the Library and its many services. During the academic
sessions, the Library is open during the following times:
Monday - Thursday 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Sunday 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Hours will be adjusted for summer sessions and during special testing times.

The Panola College Library is located in the M. P. Baker Building in the center of the
Carthage Campus. The M. P. Baker Library is named after the second president of Panola
College.

The Shelby Center Campus and the Marshall Center Campus have Texpress Courier Service
to and from M. P. Baker Library on the main campus. Students may browse the library

OUR PATRONS
The M. P. Baker/Panola College Library is proud to serve a variety of patrons including:
(1) any student holding a valid Panola College identification card; (2) all college
employees; (3) any person whose home library has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with
Panola College and who holds a valid library card from that library; (4) local patrons in
the Panola College service area who hold a Panola College library card; (5) TexShare
students and faculty from other colleges and universities; (6) lifetime Panola
College Alumni Association members.

IDENTIFICATION
Patrons should expect to present a current valid identification before using library
services. Panola College students are required to present a Panola College I.D. card,
while friends from other libraries are required to present the valid card from their home
library. Panola lifetime Alumni should present their membership cards. The Library Staff will issue a card to local patrons from the service area for
a nominal charge.

INTERLIBRARY
LOAN SERVICES
Interlibrary loan services for the borrowing of materials from other libraries may be
obtained by contacting the circulation desk. Costs vary depending upon the library
borrowed from, the type of material, length of use, and need for turnaround time. For more
information, contact the librarian on duty at the circulation desk. TexShare are available at the circulation desk. These cards are
issued to Panola College students, in good standing with M.P. Baker Library, for use at
member libraries with reciprocal borrowing agreements.
REFERENCE
SERVICES
A large assortment of materials is available through the Reference Services area.
Personalized bibliographic instruction and assistance are available at the Reference Desk.
Access to numerous databases can be obtained in the Computer Reference area. Materials
available provide brief, factual and bibliographic information on a wide variety of
subjects generally reflecting the college curriculum. Individual and group tours of the
facility, as well as bibliographic instruction, are always available upon request.

ACTIVITIES
The M. P. Baker Library offers a variety of programming events
to enhance cultural and educational opportunities to our college community. We
sponsor art and photography exhibits, book signing /author's receptions, lunch
box lectures to promote our college's program offering and various actives. We
feature speakers and specialists in a variety of subjects. We participate
in several annual celebrations; i.e.
Occupational Therapy
Month, Florence
Nightingale Commemoration, International
Edible Books Celebration, Miniature
Books Society, Constitution Day,
Black History Month,
GIS Day, etc.

COLLECTIONS
THE GENERAL COLLECTION
The general collection at the M. P. Baker Library consists of more than
100,000
volumes of circulating books, serials and audio-visual materials housed on the
Carthage campus, including about 50,000 titles of which are in electronic
formats available thru our NetLibrary paid access and other aggregated vendors
for our faculty, staff and student use.
Since January of 1995 the collection has been accessible through an electronic card
catalog and management system. Patrons may search for books using a book title, an author,
any number of key word searching strategies, or by subject. Since the system is fully
integrated with the library staffs management system, patrons may determine item
availability directly from the electronic catalog. Patrons may access other card catalogs
of other libraries from M. P. Baker Library. This further simplifies the borrowing and
loaning of materials.

HEALTH / SCIENCE LIBRARY COLLECTION
The Health/Science Library is located upstairs in the main library. This collection
supports the Health/Science related programs on all three campuses, such as Nursing,
Occupational Therapy and Medical Records Technology. Available on-line are CINAHL,
Health Source Plus, ADAM, and
access to the National Library of Medicine and Medline via the Internet.
THE MEDIA SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND MEDIA
COLLECTION
The Media Services Department of M. P. Baker Library includes a collection of over 3,000
titles including videotapes, audiotapes, CD's, portfolios, computer files and sound
recordings. The services of the department include the housing and disbursement of
audio-visual equipment, and teleconferencing.
LOCAL GENEALOGY ARCHIVE COLLECTION
M. P. Baker Library offers a small, but excellent genealogy collection that complements
those of local area libraries. The library also holds microfilm of the Panola Watchman
Newspaper from its inception. The genealogy collection includes Panola College history,
Panola County history and the history of local area families. This collection
may be found in the Reference section of the Library.

SUBSCRIPTIONS
PERIODICALS AND SUBSCRIPTIONS
The library holds current subscriptions to more than 200 periodicals. Wide-ranging in
scope and detail, the collection includes both popular and scholarly titles. Newspapers
subscribed to are found in the Reference and Reading areas, while Internet
databases subscribed to may be accessed in the Computer area. Microfiche and bound
magazines subscribed to are also located on the main floor. The Health/Science Library
upstairs houses medical and nursing journals on microfiche and in hard copy.
Health/Science database subscriptions may also be accessed in the downstairs Computer area
via the Internet.
NEWSPAPERS
The library subscribes to a large assortment of newspapers, located in the
Quiet Reading area. Among them are Garrison in the News,
Chronicle of Higher Education, Community College Week, Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel, Jefferson Jimplecute,
Center Light and Champion, Longview News Journal, Marshall News Messenger,
Panola Watchman, Pony Express, USA Today Newspaper, Wall Street Journal and
Washington Post. Recent back issues of most newspapers are kept at the
circulation desk. Patrons wishing to request the
start-up of a new subscription should see the Library Director.
ELECTRONIC
DATABASES SUBSCRIPTIONS
Included in the library collection is a large assortment of databases, including:
ACS, CINAHL, Credo Reference, Columbia Granger's World of Poetry, DOAJ, EBSCO Host, EJS,
eLibrary Curriculum, First Search, Gale Databases of Literature and Nursing, Groiler
Encyclopedia, Heritage Quest Online, Highwire Press, Institutional Archives
Registry, Learning Express, LISTA, Medline,
National Library of Medicine, Ovid, Proquest Science, Science Direct College
Edition, Sirs
Researcher, Texas Sanborn Digital Maps, TDNet, Texas State Library, TexShare Databases, TexShare Library Catalogs,
Thomson Micromedex Health Care Series.
Twenty-one workstations are available for Internet research on a first-come,
first-served basis. There is no charge for doing research on the library workstations. A
nominal charge may be included for printing information.

SPECIAL SERVICES
THE COMPUTER LAB
A complete computer lab is located on the main floor of the library. Open during the
library hours of operation, the computer lab is provided not only to give students access
to the research capabilities available on the Internet, but to provide access to computer
software for the completion of assignments using Word, Access, PowerPoint and
other applications. The lab is equipped with the latest computers with color monitors and
laser printers. A current Panola College enrolment, or local library card held by a patron 15 or
older is required to use the library computer lab.
THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
The M. P. Baker Library makes every effort to comply with the Americans with
Disabilities Act. Various services, special furniture and electronic equipment are
available upon request. The Library Staff is always happy to assist patrons to
the second floor of the library and/or retrieve materials beyond the
reach of any of our patrons.
COPYRIGHT LAW
The M. P. Baker Library adheres to and complies with the provisions of the United States
Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.). Although copying of learning resource materials is permitted,
it is the user's responsibility to stay within the law. Although the LRC recognizes the
need for copies of materials for either preservation or research purposes, it will not be
responsible for any patrons willful infringement of the law. The Copyright Policy is
posted by all copy machines in the library.
TOURS AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION
Individual and group tours of the LRC are available upon request. Throughout each
semester organized group tours will be held to satisfy class assignments. Individual
bibliographic instruction is always available. Please sign up for a tour at the
reference desk.
