THE LIFE, TIME, AND REDEMPTION OF LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON
On February 3, 2005, Panola College will present Dr. Charles Taylor’s production of “This Is Your President Calling: The Life, Time, and Redemption of Lyndon Baines Johnson.”
Dr. Charles Taylor, Professor of History and Government at Panola College wrote this play after completing years of extensive research on Johnson. The production focuses on many aspects of Johnson’s life including his 1948 senatorial race and the scandal over election fraud in Duvall County; his relationship with John F. Kennedy and the Kennedy family, formation of the Warren Commission, the challenges of passing the 1964 Civil Rights Bill, the Vietnam War, his failing health, and of course life with Lady Bird.
“Over thirty authoritative sources were referenced in the production of this work with an overwhelming amount of information obtained from taped material kept for posterity at the LBJ Presidential Library,” said Dr. Taylor. “Though this production provides historical accuracy beyond conventional wisdom and lays a new groundwork for historical debate, it is also laced with many humorous and tragic aspects of the very human Johnson.”
Dr. Taylor plays the part of LBJ and also provides the voices for a number of characters that interact with the former President. Taylor will be joined on stage by Jessica Garner, a Panola College student majoring in theatre from Elysian Fields. She will play the role of Lady Bird Johnson.
