Perry vetoes health bill for junior colleges
The Panola Watchman
6/21/07

Last Friday, Governor Rick Perry vetoed a line item in HB1, which cuts almost $155,000,000 from the state’s 50 public community colleges for the second year of the biennium budget, which relates to a more than $945,000 cut for Panola College’s staff and faculty insurance benefits.

What is puzzling is that in Governor Perry’s budget recommendation for the next two years, he included the budget item that he just vetoed.”

Governor Perry stated that community colleges falsified their appropriations requests, which is quite a statement. Panola College president Dr. Greg Powell said, “I categorically denied that Panola College falsified our appropriations request. The Governor is misinformed.

“Making up the financial difference will be extremely hard. Many districts are at their maximum taxing revenue, we could raise tuition and fees again, but most will probably close special programs and cut staffing positions,” said Powell.

Junior colleges educate the largest sector of colleges and universities in the state. About 70 percent of all freshmen and sophomores gateway into higher education through the system, added Powell.

TEXARKANA - There wasn't much more Panola hurler Clayton McMillan could do to try to beat his old teammates here Saturday.

He allowed five hits, gave up one walk and got beat 5-3 on three unearned runs. He might have tried talking coach Don Clinton into letting him hit somewhere down in the lineup. The Ponies had just seven total, only one among those batting in the five hole, or lower. But the Bulldogs did put the loss in McMillan's corner, calling it sweet to beat the former Carthage High hurler they signed last year...more

Fillies beat San Jacinto, fall to Tyler
The Panola Watchman
By TED LEACH
March 13, 2007

JACKSONVILLE - When Panola last appeared in the Region XIV tournament two years ago, it was poised to do battle with anyone, Trinity Valley or any other pretender.
This season the Fillies hustled hard and played well until the end when a slump at the end of regulation cost them their momentum.

They managed to beat San Jacinto, 74-61, in the opening round and the table appeared set for another title run when Trinity Valley got knocked down by Blinn in another semifinal outing.
But too much was required of the Fillies, who had already given much, and the Lady Apaches ousted the Greenies, 85-74, by scoring their final 17 points from the foul line.
Panola bowed out with a 21-11.

Tyler and Blinn were left to battle for the title and an NJCAA tourney berth.

CARTHAGE — The Panola women's basketball game on Wednesday against Jacksonville could have easily been a trap game for the Fillies, considering their first-place tie with Trinity Valley and Blinn, and Jacksonville's winless Region XIV campaign to date.

But Panola proved early there would be no letdown. Jacksonville could hang with Panola for four minutes, trailing 7-5. But the Fillies scored the next 15 points as part of a 24-2 run that gave them a commanding 31-7 lead, en route to a convincing 90-60 dismantling of the last-place Lady Jaguars at Arthur Johnson Gymnasium...more
