Health Information Technology | Medical Administrative Assistant / Secretary
Medical Coding Technician

The Program. The Health Information Technology Program prepares students to work in a variety of healthcare facilities as health information technicians with a diverse blend of clinical knowledge and information management skills.  Students are trained in assembling, analyzing, coding, abstracting, and maintaining paper-based and electronic health records.

The program offices and classrooms are located on the 2nd floor of the Gullette Technology Building, Panola College Campus, 1109 W. Panola St., Carthage, Texas.

Accreditation. The Health Information Technology Program of Panola College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation Health Infomatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Graduates of the program will be eligible to apply to write the national qualifying examination for certification as a registered health information technician (RHIT).

Admission Criteria.
1. Obtain full admission to Panola College.
2. Submit to Admissions/Records office an official high school transcript and any official college transcripts (if applicable) or GED scores.
3. Complete Texas Success Initiative testing requirements - refer to current catalog.
4. complete and return application for admission to the Health Information Technology Program.
5. Must have a 2.5 or higher grade point average in previously completed college courses to be admitted to the HIT Association of Applied Science Degree Program.

Health Information Technology
Associate Degree in Applied Science

The Health Information Technician is a profession with a diverse blend of clinical knowledge and information management skills. Most HIT graduates work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, but many are finding employment in home health agencies, rehabilitation facilities, county health departments, insurance companies, managed care facilities, county health departments, insurance companies, managed care institutions, software companies, legal firms, and consulting firms.


Medical Administrative Assistant / Secretary
Certificate Program

The Medical Administrative Assistance / Secretary Program prepares students to work in a variety of healthcare offices as receptionist, coder, billing specialist, or other front office position.  This is a two-semester certificate program.


Medical Coding Technician
Certificate Program

Medical coding is the transformation of verbal descriptions of diseases, injuries, and procedures into alphanumeric codes. A coding technician is an individual who reviews and analyzes health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement purposes, in the assessment of clinical care, and for support of medical research activity.
