Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover named him the new chief of the Shreveport Police Department. (Val Horvath/The Times)Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover named Willie Shaw as the city's new police chief today. The 20-year veteran of the Shreveport Police Department had most recently been assigned to the department's Administrative Division.

The City Council will vote on Shaw's appointment July 13. Council chairwoman Joyce Bowman said she's pleased with Glover's choice.

Shaw will function as the interim chief until the council's action.

Glover interviewed 13 of 15 candidates who qualified for the job through civil service testing.

Glover started the search for a new chief after former Chief Henry Whitehorn Sr. was nominated to the U.S. Marshals' Service. Whitehorn started that job today. He will be based in Shreveport.

Seventeen area lawmen applied to take the police chief exam last year after U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu recommended Whitehorn for the federal post.
