For those who do not know me, permit me to tell you about myself. I was born in Texarkana, Arkansas too many years ago to remember now. I grew up in Carthage, and I have lived here nearly all of my life. I graduated from Carthage High School in 1963 (a very good year) . I was active in band, speech, journalism, and drama in high school. I won a few awards in those areas. Two of the happiest years of my life were spent as a student at Panola College where I earned an associate of arts degree.. In fact, I was president of my sophomore class, and, believe it or not, I was named the Green Jackets' Beau (the Green Jackets was an all girls service club in those days). I was also president of the choir and a member of the Singing Collegians (the forerunner of the Panola Pipers.) I served on the staff of the year book, The Pony. I was a member of the very first play cast from Panola College to win a superior award at the Texas Community College Speech and Theatre Association's play festival.
I graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from
East Texas Baptist University in
Marshall, Texas. While at ETBU, I directed a public relations performance
team called The New Galatians. I am particularly proud of the fact that I
was named the outstanding student in the speech department. I earned a
master of divinity degree from New Orleans
Baptist Theology Seminary. Twice I was selected by my fellow students
to preach in the NOBTS chapel. I am proud of that honor as well. I
have done graduate study in communications at the
University of Texas at Tyler in Tyler,
Texas. Marrying a wonderful lady, Miss Suzanne, was the best thing that ever happened to me. We are MaMaw and PaPaw to two wonderful boys, Brandon and Ethan. I teach speech Director of the
Divisions of Liberal and Fine Arts. I am a past-president of the Texas
Community College Speech and Theatre Association. I am a past-president the
Carthage Lions Club. I serve on the board of the Marshall Regional Arts Council
and on the board of Mission Carthage.
In 2005, I
received an honor that I will cherish forever. I was named "Panola County's
Citizen of the Year" by the Panola County Chamber of Commerce. In 2007, I was
named "Man of the Year" by the One Hundred Men of Texas And in 2007, I
received an Excellence in Teaching Award at the NISOD convention at the
University of Texas at Austin.
