Jacksonville dashes Fillies playoff hopes
Tuesday, 02 March 2010 02:22 PM CST
The whole season came down to one game for the Fillies.
Entering the game on Wednesday, Feb. 24, the Fillies needed to win and for opponent Jacksonville to lose one of their last two games. This scenario was what it would take for the Fillies to make it to the Regional Tournament.
Both teams came out and played with the sense of urgency early, but it was Jacksonville that built the early lead. After trailing by 13 points, the Fillies worked hard and cut the lead to 30-21 at the break. That was just a sign of things to come.
In the second half, Jacksonville extended their lead back to double digits, but behind a flurry of three pointers from Alicia Mitcham, Kelsey Bardsley, and Ariel Billington, the Fillies roared back in front and forced a timeout. The run would continue and Panola would forge ahead 49-41 with 9:30 left to play. From there, Jacksonville methodically worked their way back, taking back the lead for good at 55-53 and then closing the door with a decisive 11-5 run to finish the game.
The season ended for Panola with a disappointing road loss. Tatisana Zhurauliova led the way in her final game as a Filly with 18 points. Alicia Mitcham, also playing her final game, had 15 points in the loss.
Fillies miss out on playoffs
Tuesday, 02 March 2010 02:16 PM CST
Entering the game on Saturday, Feb. 20, Panola needed to win its last two games to control their own playoff destiny.
Paris was fighting to finish in the top half of the conference, somewhere they have not been in a long time. Much was at stake in this Region 14 contest.
Paris was ready to go from the outset and came out strong, shooting nearly 50 percent in the first half. They started the game up 11-0 before the Fillies got things going. Behind hot three-point shooting from Raven Alexander, Panola stormed back into the game cutting the lead to 20-14. The offensive explosion would continue over the final 13 minutes and when it is was over, Paris led 56-35 at half.
The second half was more of the same early for Paris as they stretched their lead to 28 at one point. The Fillies kept working though and made a late push, but it was not enough at the end as Paris was able to finish with an 86-71 victory.
Ariel Billington had 11 points, and Tatisana Zhurauliova had 10 points in the loss.
