The Civil War came to life on the Panola College campus recently. The 3rd Texas Cavalry were here to give a hands on view to Panola College, as well as several area high school students, of what life was like during the Civil War. Major Dyson Nickel was the leader of the group. He addressed the students and explained different weapons including handguns, rifles, and swords and how different they were then compared to present day. Games of the period were also demonstrated. Also, Mrs. Ann Boland and her art students were on hand to help students make corn husk dolls. “Students came away with a greater appreciation and knowledge of what life was like during the Civil War,” stated Curtis Odom, history professor, who organized the event.
