The Kings of Texas Swing, Asleep at the Wheel, performed in concert at the Carthage Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Grammy Award-winning “Kings of Texas Swing” are the first of a Performing Arts Series sponsored by the Fine & Performing Arts Department at Panola College.
Collaborating with Panola College on the show were Main Street, the City of Carthage, the Panola County Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
Local musical group, In the Jeans, opened the show. Sisters Rachel and Sydney Gee along with Bob Gonzales played a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, violin and percussion to produce a folk-music sound.
Headlining the show, Asleep at the Wheel, has won nine Grammy Awards over the group’s 42-year history. The band continues to introduce American roots music and the western swing genre to a new generation on tour. The band performed such tunes as - Get your kicks on Route 66, Miles and Miles of Texas, and Hot Rod Lincoln. The show was successful and all who attended enjoyed the performance.
The Panola College Band and Chorale sold barbecue sandwich meals for $7 each as a fundraiser for the Fine Arts Department.
