Panola College Receives $1,000 Donation for Floating Granite Fountain
With the construction of the new Health and Sciences building due to be completed fall 2015, the Panola College Foundation believes it is important to mark the memorable occasion. The foundation intends to accomplish this with the addition of a beautiful floating granite fountain which will be placed on the North side of the new building. The fountain will be the beginning of a larger project, an Inspiration Garden, which will run the entire length of the new building. The Inspiration Garden will offer a beautiful oasis for students to study and will incorporate learning opportunities for students enrolled in health-related and science classes.
The floating granite fountain is a custom designed interactive sculpture that consists of a large 48” granite ball supported by a thin film of water. The granite sphere will be engraved with the map of the world and engineered to rotate on the approximate axis of the Earth. As an interactive sculpture, spectators will be able to accelerate or change the course of the floating sphere, only to have it return to its natural rotation when left alone.
On Monday, November 17th, the Panola College Foundation received their first donation from Dr. Greg and Joann Powell of a $1,000 towards the Floating Granite Fountain.
“We appreciate the work of the Panola College Foundation and applaud them for choosing to place this art work on our campus to commemorate the construction of the new Health and Sciences building,” said Greg Powell.
“The foundation is extremely grateful for the donation made by the Powells for this beautiful fountain,” said Jessica Pace, “We hope that their gift will inspire more in the community to sponsor this new landmark for Panola College.”
The Panola College Foundation is currently raising funds for the purchase and installation of the Floating Granite Fountain. The foundation is accepting donations for this project and limited naming opportunities are available.
