Panola College Hosts Welding Contest

Welding students gathered at Panola College to test their skills 

The Panola College Welding Technology Department held a welding contest for high school seniors on February 7, 2013. Thirty-one welders from Texas and Louisiana competed in a skills contest at Panola College. High schools that sent teams to participate included Buna High School, Gary High School, Carthage High School, Shelbyville High School, Marshall High School, Trinity High School, Zwolle High School, North DeSoto High School, Many High School, Stanley High School and Converse High School.

First place winner was Jake Wheeler from Buna High School with 172 points. Jake received a $1,500 Panola College scholarship and various prizes. Second place winner, with 169 points, was Ethan Sekaly from Many, LA. Ethan received a $1,000 Panola College scholarship and various prizes. Taking home third place honors was Bryce Tippett from Buna with 165 points. Two welders from Carthage High School finished out the top five. Jake Stillwell had 163 points for fourth place, while Nick Anderson took fifth place with 156 points. Winners were awarded welding supplies and equipment donated by Matheson Tri-Gas and Red Ball Oxygen. Additional pictures are available on the Pony Express website.
